RF Microneedling in Naperville — Venus Viva NanoFractional RF at Fusion Med Spa
Advanced RF Microneedling Technology — Safer, Smarter Resurfacing
Some skin concerns respond beautifully to standard microneedling. Deeper acne scars. Significant sun damage. Pronounced textural irregularities. Skin laxity that’s moved beyond what collagen induction alone can fully address. For those concerns, you need something with more reach — and that’s exactly what Venus Viva NanoFractional RF delivers.
At Fusion Med Spa in Naperville, we offer RF microneedling using the Venus Viva — a precision skin resurfacing device that combines radiofrequency energy with NanoFractional technology to remodel the skin at a deeper level than standard microneedling can achieve. The result is meaningful improvement in texture, tone, scarring, and laxity — with a safety profile designed specifically to avoid the risks that have made some RF microneedling devices controversial.
We’ve been performing advanced skin treatments since 2003. RF microneedling is one of the most powerful tools in our arsenal — when it’s the right fit for your skin.
Venus Viva NanoFractional RF microneedling at Fusion Med Spa in Naperville, IL uses SmartScan™ randomized energy delivery to resurface skin safely across all skin tones. Unlike aggressive RF devices, Venus Viva’s energy stays in the dermis — no fat loss risk, no grid marks. Treats acne scars, deep wrinkles, enlarged pores, rosacea, uneven texture, and skin laxity. Numbing cream is applied before treatment; downtime is 1–3 days of redness. Fusion Med Spa offers both Venus Viva RF microneedling and BioTouch Precision™ standard microneedling — our team assesses your skin and recommends the right option, or a combination protocol, based on your specific concerns and goals.

Standard microneedling works mechanically. Tiny needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin, triggering a wound-healing response that stimulates collagen and elastin production. It’s highly effective for a wide range of concerns — and for most clients, it’s exactly what their skin needs.
RF microneedling does everything standard microneedling does, and then adds radiofrequency energy delivered directly through those channels into the dermis. That RF energy creates a secondary effect — controlled thermal coagulation in the deep tissue — that produces more significant collagen remodeling than mechanical needling alone can generate.
The practical difference: RF microneedling reaches deeper, remodels more aggressively, and produces more dramatic results for concerns that are resistant to standard collagen induction. Deeper acne scars. More pronounced texture. Early to moderate skin laxity. Persistent rosacea. These are the cases where RF microneedling earns its place.
It’s not that one approach is better than the other. They’re different tools for different jobs. At Fusion, we have both — and our team will tell you honestly which one your skin actually needs.
The Venus Viva uses two proprietary technologies working in combination: NanoFractional RF and SmartScan™.
NanoFractional RF: The device’s applicator delivers radiofrequency energy through an array of tiny pins — either a 160-pin or 80-pin tip, selected based on your skin’s needs. Those pins create micro-channels in the skin’s surface, surrounded by intact, untreated tissue. The RF energy then flows through those channels into the dermis, creating controlled zones of ablation and coagulation.
This ablation-coagulation response is what drives the results. The dermis responds to the controlled thermal injury by triggering an intensive healing and remodeling process — producing new collagen and elastin, improving skin architecture from the inside out, and gradually resurfacing the areas of damage.
Critically, Venus Viva’s energy stays in the dermis. It does not reach the subcutaneous fat layer below — which matters more than it might sound.
SmartScan™ Technology: This is what separates Venus Viva from older and more aggressive RF microneedling devices. SmartScan™ randomizes the energy delivery pattern across the treatment area rather than using a fixed grid. The result is uniform heating with no hot spots, no grid marks, and sufficient intact tissue between treated zones to ensure fast, even healing.
The randomized pattern also dramatically reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — making Venus Viva one of the few RF microneedling devices confirmed safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI.
Not all RF microneedling devices are built the same — and the differences have real consequences for your safety and your results.
Some RF microneedling devices on the market use aggressive settings that drive RF energy deep enough to reach the subcutaneous fat layer beneath the skin. When that happens, there’s a risk of paradoxical adipose atrophy — fat loss in the treated area that creates visible depressions, hollowing, or contour irregularities in the face. It’s rare, but it’s a documented complication of RF devices that operate at depths that reach fat tissue.
Venus Viva is engineered specifically to avoid this. Its energy parameters are calibrated to the dermis — deep enough to produce meaningful resurfacing and collagen remodeling, not deep enough to compromise the fat layer beneath. No fat loss risk. No contour irregularities.
The fixed-grid pattern used by some competing devices also creates a distinct risk: if energy delivery isn’t perfectly uniform, you can end up with grid marks — visible patterns of treated and untreated tissue that take weeks to resolve. SmartScan™’s randomized delivery eliminates this problem entirely.
We chose Venus Viva specifically because of this safety profile. When we’re treating your face, we want a device that produces exceptional results without introducing risks that weren’t there before.
Venus Viva is particularly effective for concerns that have significant depth — where the damage or structural change exists in the dermis, not just at the surface.
Acne scarring — especially deeper boxcar and rolling scars that don’t fully respond to standard collagen induction. RF energy reaches the fibrous tissue that anchors these scars and begins to break it up and remodel it. Read more about microneedling for acne scars in Naperville.
Skin laxity — early to moderate looseness along the jawline, neck, and under the eyes. The thermal coagulation response tightens existing collagen and stimulates new production, producing a firming effect that standard microneedling alone is less effective at generating.
Deep wrinkles and lines — forehead lines, crow’s feet, perioral lines, and nasolabial folds with genuine depth benefit from the added remodeling power of RF.
Rosacea — Venus Viva has been shown to improve rosacea-related redness and texture. The RF energy targets the vascular components that contribute to persistent redness, producing noticeable improvement over a series of treatments.
Enlarged pores — RF-driven collagen tightening around pore openings produces a more refined skin surface.
Uneven texture and sun damage — the resurfacing effect addresses surface irregularities, rough texture, and the kind of diffuse sun damage that accumulates over years.
Stretch marks — on the face, neck, décolletage, and body areas where deeper resurfacing is warranted.
Pigmentation and uneven tone — Venus Viva’s controlled resurfacing helps address pigmentation concerns alongside texture, particularly when combined with a complementary treatment protoc
Before treatment, our team assesses your skin, discusses your specific concerns, and determines the appropriate tip, depth, and energy settings for your goals. No two treatments are identical — the protocol is built around your skin, not a template.
During treatment, the Venus Viva handpiece is moved systematically across the treatment area. Most clients describe the sensation as a warm, prickling feeling — present but very manageable. A full face treatment takes approximately 30–45 minutes.
After treatment, your skin will be red and may feel warm — similar to a moderate sunburn. That redness typically resolves within 1–3 days for standard settings, up to 7–10 days for more aggressive protocols. Some light exfoliation of the treated skin may occur in the days following. We’ll send you home with specific aftercare guidance — gentle cleanser, moisturizer, strict SPF — and a protocol tailored to your skin.
Most clients feel completely comfortable resuming normal activities within a few days.
RF microneedling produces results progressively as collagen remodels and new tissue matures. Here’s what the honest timeline looks like:
2 weeks: Initial improvement is visible as post-treatment redness resolves. Skin looks smoother and more refined.
4–6 weeks: Collagen production ramps up. Texture continues to improve. Scars begin to soften. Pores appear smaller.
8–12 weeks: This is where Venus Viva’s results become most visible. Scars are noticeably improved. Skin tone is more even. Firmness is measurably better. The quality of the skin — not just the surface — has genuinely changed.
After a full series of 3 treatments: Results compound. By the completion of the series, most clients describe their skin as the most significant improvement they’ve seen from a non-surgical treatment.
Results have been shown to last 6–12 months, with many clients maintaining with 1–2 treatments per year after completing their initial series.
Venus Viva is a powerful treatment — and like any powerful treatment, it’s not the right fit for everyone. Our team takes the time to assess your skin honestly before recommending it.
You’re likely a strong candidate if you:
Venus Viva may not be the right fit if you:
We’d rather assess your skin and recommend BioTouch if that’s what you actually need than sell you a more aggressive treatment. That’s what an honest consultation looks like at Fusion.
Most practices offer one microneedling device and make every client fit it. We do it differently.
At Fusion, we offer two distinct microneedling technologies — and our team recommends the right one based on your skin’s actual needs, not what’s most convenient to offer.
BioTouch Precision™ is our standard microneedling platform — a next-generation wired device with a patented tilted cartridge, no heat, no RF. Paired with PDRN and advanced Italian regenerative mesotherapy serums, it’s the right choice for texture, collagen building, moderate acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines, and skin quality improvement. It’s also the right choice for anyone who needs to avoid heat — including most melasma clients.
Venus Viva NanoFractional RF is the step up — for clients who need deeper resurfacing, more aggressive scar remodeling, or the added firmness that RF-driven thermal coagulation produces. More downtime, more dramatic results for the right concerns.
Some clients use both in a coordinated series — BioTouch for maintenance and serum delivery, Venus Viva for periodic deeper resurfacing. Our team builds a protocol around where your skin is and where you want it to go.
Explore our precision microneedling with BioTouch Precision™ to understand how the two approaches differ and which might be the better starting point for your skin.
Venus Viva — the safer RF choice. We chose Venus Viva specifically for its safety profile. SmartScan™ randomized energy delivery, no fat loss risk, no grid marks, and confirmed safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types. When RF microneedling is the right choice, we want it done without introducing risks that weren’t there before your treatment.
Both options under one roof. Standard microneedling and RF microneedling, assessed and recommended based on your skin — not what’s easiest to sell. No practice in the Naperville area offers both BioTouch Precision™ and Venus Viva together with the clinical rationale for choosing between them.
Over 20 years of skin expertise. We’ve been part of the Naperville community since 2003 — long before RF microneedling existed. Our team’s experience spans thousands of skin treatments across every skin type and concern. We know when RF is the right call and when it isn’t.
Honest assessments, every time. If Venus Viva isn’t what your skin actually needs, we’ll tell you that. If BioTouch will get you where you want to go without the added downtime, we’ll recommend that instead. Our reputation is built on giving people real advice — not booking the most expensive treatment on the menu.
No injections. Ever. Fusion is a non-injection practice. Everything we do — including RF microneedling — works through technology and technique, never through injected substances. RF microneedling at Fusion means real, meaningful skin improvement through your body’s own healing response.

What’s the difference between RF microneedling and regular microneedling?
Standard microneedling creates micro-channels in the skin mechanically, triggering a collagen-building healing response. RF microneedling does the same thing and adds radiofrequency energy delivered through those channels into the dermis. The RF creates a thermal coagulation effect that drives more aggressive collagen remodeling — producing more dramatic results for deeper concerns like significant acne scarring, pronounced laxity, and resistant texture. For milder concerns, standard microneedling is often the better starting point. Our team assesses which approach is appropriate for your skin.
Is Venus Viva safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. Venus Viva’s SmartScan™ randomized energy delivery is specifically designed to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — and the device has been confirmed clinically safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI. This is a meaningful distinction from some RF microneedling devices that carry higher PIH risk for deeper complexions. If you have a darker skin tone and have been told RF microneedling isn’t suitable for you, it may be worth discussing whether the specific device being offered is the issue, not RF microneedling in general.
What is the fat loss risk with RF microneedling?
Paradoxical adipose atrophy — sometimes called fat loss — is a documented risk associated with RF microneedling devices that drive energy deep enough to reach the subcutaneous fat layer beneath the skin. It can create visible depressions or hollowing in the face. Venus Viva’s energy parameters are calibrated specifically to stay in the dermis — it does not reach the fat layer, which eliminates this risk. This is one of the primary reasons we chose Venus Viva over more aggressive RF platforms.
How many RF microneedling sessions will I need?
A standard series is 3 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Most clients see meaningful improvement after 2 sessions and optimal results after completing the full series. After the initial series, most clients maintain with 1–2 treatments per year. Some clients with significant scarring or more pronounced concerns may benefit from additional sessions — our team will discuss realistic expectations for your specific situation during consultation.
How much downtime should I expect?
Most clients experience 1–3 days of redness and mild swelling following Venus Viva treatment — similar to a moderate sunburn. At more aggressive settings, some clients see 5–7 days of more significant redness and light skin exfoliation. We’ll set specific expectations based on the protocol we’re recommending for your skin. Most clients can resume normal activities within a few days, using gentle skincare and strict SPF while the skin heals.
Can I combine Venus Viva with other treatments?
Yes — and in many cases, a combination approach produces the best results. Venus Viva can be combined with BioTouch Precision™ microneedling in a coordinated series — Viva for deeper resurfacing, BioTouch for maintenance and targeted serum delivery between Viva sessions. BioRePeel can complement the protocol for surface brightening and texture. We don’t recommend combining Venus Viva with IPL or other energy treatments on the same day — these work best when spaced appropriately in a planned series. Our team will build a protocol that makes sense for your goals and your skin’s recovery.
Does RF microneedling hurt?
Most clients describe the sensation as a warm, prickling feeling that’s very manageable. Our team adjusts settings to ensure your comfort while still achieving the resurfacing results your skin needs. You’re in and out in under an hour with no significant discomfort during or after the treatment.
Who should NOT get RF microneedling?
RF microneedling is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for clients with active skin infections or acne breakouts in the treatment area, those on blood-thinning medications, clients who have used isotretinoin within the past 6 months, anyone with a history of keloid scarring, and clients with active inflammatory skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area. We also exercise caution with melasma — heat can stimulate melanocyte activity and worsen melasma in some cases. See our microneedling for melasma in Naperville article for more detail. Our team assesses each client individually and will recommend BioTouch Precision™ or another approach if Venus Viva isn’t appropriate for your skin.
How does Venus Viva compare to Morpheus8?
Both are RF microneedling devices, but they use fundamentally different energy delivery approaches. Morpheus8 uses a fixed-grid energy pattern and operates at depths that can reach the subcutaneous fat layer — which is associated with the fat loss risk mentioned above and can produce visible grid marks if settings aren’t precisely controlled. Venus Viva uses SmartScan™ randomized energy delivery that stays in the dermis, producing no grid marks and no fat loss risk. Venus Viva is also confirmed safe for all skin tones, whereas some competing devices require extra caution with darker complexions. We don’t offer Morpheus8 — Venus Viva is our RF platform specifically because of this safety profile.
What should I do to prepare for Venus Viva treatment?
Arrive with clean skin — no makeup, sunscreen, or skincare products. Avoid sun exposure, self-tanner, and aggressive exfoliants (retinols, acids) for at least 5–7 days before treatment. Let us know about any medications you’re taking, especially blood thinners or anything that affects skin healing. If you’ve had any recent energy treatments, laser, or chemical peels, let your specialist know so we can ensure appropriate timing. We’ll walk you through the full pre-treatment protocol during your consultation.
